How I Made It- Floral Mixed Media Photography

Many fans ask me during shows and events where my framed photography collages are on display, "How did you do that?" or "What is it?"  So I thought I would let you know here, a special extra for my blog readers!  Let's start off with the finished product-
This is a photo of the finished collage.  I make this item solely for the photographs it produces in the end.  They are available in 5x5 inches up to 30x30 inches in my Etsy shop
Step one of creating- I cut strips of paper from magazines and other sources-
Step two and three- I paint the strips of paper or magazine a bit and then start to glue them together to construct the floral shape-
Step four and five- I start to arrange the pieces on canvas and glue them in place, once the canvas is filled I add little extras to resemble the leaves or sometimes water drops etc, the final step is sealing the entire piece in varnish for either a matte or gloss effect-
And there you have it!  It is a long messy process but I love the end effect, and it is a great conversation starter at shows...and now you know how it's made!

Painting Edges

After competing in Rawards this past week I have been letting myself rest creatively.  I feel these 'rests' are an important part of my creative life.  Most people view it as a break from work but I see it more as a recharge.  When I expend so much energy during busy times such as this past month I can really feel my creativity start to suffer if I keep pushing myself.  I then feel my work begins to feel forced and suffer as well.  The breaks from creating and painting need not be long, most often a week or less.  sometimes I will just work on another project that doesn't involve painting such as crochet (I like scarves)  Today I have time to be in the studio but still want to give myself a little more resting time.  On days like these I find 'busy work' that doesn't pull on my creativity, such as cleaning the studio, updating my portfolio, or my favorite painting edges of canvas.
